The Aotearoa Species Classifier apps for Android and iOS, available from Google Play and Apple's app store, respectively, require access to the camera of the device that runs the app so that photos can be taken. The app stores and processes these photos locally on device, using local inference with the neural network model included in the apps, and does not send them anywhere.
The web application available at https://what-is-this.cms.waikato.ac.nz temporarily stores uploaded images so that they can be processed by the neural network model running on the server that hosts the web application.
